About The Department
The College was established in 1949 and the science departments came into existence in the year 1960 as an elective subject of two years Intermediate Science Course. Under Dibrugarh University affiliation, Chemistry department started general course from 1960 to 1973. Prof. V. Jogi was the initiator of the department with short tenure and his vacancy was filled up by Prof. Eshahaque Ali in 1974, who also rendered short servive to the department. Dr. T. N. Hazarika joined in the post of Prof. Ali. Thereafter, Prof. J. Pathak, Prof. L. C. Gogoi, Mr. Gamodhar Kaivorta (Demostration) and Dr. Anil Kr. Baruah joined the departmment. During their tenure, Dibrugarh University accorded permission to open honours (Major) course in the year 1973. At present the department has 6 full time teachers. The academic environment in terms of quality of the teachers as well as the learning process is healthy and adequate. The department has its library as well as well equipped practical laboratory for TDC and Higher Secondary students. The main aim and objective of this department in UG course is to provide quality education to the students. Chemistry education plays a vital role in enhancing the quality of teaching learning, research and development and thereby improving the quality of life. In order to motivate our students towards chemistry education the students should provide theoretical as well as practical knowledge so that they motivated towards chemistry education.
Teaching methods adopted to improve student learning:
- Interactive classroom teaching with projector and visualizer have been employed for better understanding of the subject.
- Regular use of black board and smart board (ICT) in class room teaching.
- Using power point and 3D animation to explain hardcore topics in syllabus
- Suggesting web link to students for higher studies.
- Student are assigned to submit a summarily report upon a topic in syllabus, designed to increase the curiosity level of student to compete beyond classroom.
Student projects:
Percentage of students who have done in-house projects including inter departmental/programme:
- All VI Sem students having major in Chemistry as per Syllabus in TDC (60%)
- Percentage of students placed for projects in organizations outside the institution i.e.in Research laboratories/Industry/ other agencies: 40%
Strength:
- Professional development is encouraged among staff. Opportunities are provided for the staff to attend various seminars, conferences, orientation programme and refresher courses.
- The staff also presents papers or shares research work at National & International seminar, Workshop, Journals. Books etc
- Alumni has been a major stakeholder and get together to meet, share and discuss various issues related to the field of education and opportunity.
Weakness:
- Inadequate classroom and laboratory space to meet the huge demand of student to persue with Chemistry as major subject.
- Research initiatives were to be put on forefront. Research -individual or institutional both the levels need to be strengthened.
- To meet this minor and major research grant was applied and faculty are encouraged to conduct action research and institutional level research.
Opportunity:
- By expanding the infrastructure and teaching staff, more students can be accommodated to meet the huge demand of students and starting of Post Graduate programme..
- There was a need felt to upgrade the research skill and knowledge development among the student community. To meet this invited lecture are conducted in the institution through faculty from Tezpur University, NEIST etc and student are encouraged to attend summer and winter internships in various leading research institutions in India.
- The rural students can be motivated to take up science as career. To meet this Debrajian Society for Chemistry and Environment was founded in 2016 with aim to impart environment awrness and popularize chemistry in rural areas.
Challenges:
The number of student seeking admission in Chemistry in core courses is growing larger. The number of student passing from school and junior colleges is increasing but infrastructure development in colleges is not increasing in the same pace to accommodate these students.
Future Plan :
To open PG course and self employing diploma course in near future.
